Priority Pest and Disease Problems |
|
|
Banana and plantain not only provide sustenance to rural households and urban consumers, but also to many other organisms.
These can be beneficial or even neutral, but there are also numerous pests and diseases that compete with rural households for banana and plantain production.
Bioversity and partner countries are focusing on four particular pest and disease problems due to their actual and potential impact on production: banana bunchy top virus, bacterial wilts, Fusarium wilt and black leaf streak disease. For each, a working strategy has been developed building from regions where the problem and solutions are further advanced to regions where problems are more recent and research efforts incipient.
The network strategy originated by INIBAP and carried forward by Bioversity is uniquely suited to both achieving results and building capacity in this situation.
