Priority Banana Cropping Systems PDF Print
Farmers around the world produce banana and plantain in different production systems. These represent farmer ingenuity, experimentation and tradition under particular soil and climatic conditions, but also their response to market opportunities.

Bioversity’s banana researchers and their network partners are focusing on the development of practical alternatives for enhancing productivity and sustainability in four production situations – annual high density planting, plantains in fallow and crop rotation, low input semi-permanent banana production (CIALCA in East Africa) and banana production in perennial agroforestry systems. For each system, commonly found in at least two continents and often world-wide, an electronic information resource center is being developed. This center will provide up-to-date tools and information for improved project design in rural development, for improved training and education programs and for applied research.
