| Brief description |
The urgent tasks facing IPGRI in relation to meeting international standards of genebank management relate to the regeneration of accessions that have been held continuously in vitro for many years, the improvement of the health status of the collection and the transfer of the entire collection from in vitro storage to cryopreservation.
In addition, information concerning accessions in the collection is incomplete and although an information management system is in place, this requires upgrading, while ensuring full compatibility with SINGER.
The funds for this upgrading plan will complement funds from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation. These two sources of funds will allow all the older accessions in the collection to be regenerated, all accessions to be cryopreserved and important virus infected accessions to be 'cleaned' of viruses. In the latter case, these accessions will then become available for distribution, and thus used, for the first time. The funds will also allow a comprehensive and upgraded data management system to be put in place, linking genebank management data with passport and characterization data, and through compatibility with SINGER, make a full set of data on the FAO-designated accessions available on the internet.
