Conservation of Musa germplasm
Duration
Start date

Three years
June 2002

Total grant €844 036
Donor Directorate General of Development Cooperation (DGDC)
Location Belgium
Goal To ensure the conservation of germplasm in the International Musa Germplasm Collection and carry out research to improve storage conditions.
Brief description Standard storage conditions for the INIBAP germplasm collection involves reduced temperature and low light intensity. Materials in storage are systematically evaluated every month for their performance and on average, re-cultured once a year. In order to improve the security of conservation, all accessions are screened for endophytic bacteria and remedial action taken if necessary to ensure clean cultures.

All accessions will be rejuvenated and checked for trueness-to-type during the course of the project and rejuvenated accessions will be placed in cryopreservation for long-term storage (in association with projects funded by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and the World Bank).

Accessions from the collection will be distributed on demand (5 replicates per accession). To facilitate the distribution of samples required for molecular research, a DNA bank and a freeze-dried leaf stock of approximately 150 accessions will be developed. Research will continue on the efficient production of embryogenic cell suspensions for a wide range of species and varieties and a collection of frozen cell suspension will be established.
