| Goal |
To improve banana plantation productivity through technological innovations to increase soil health |
| Brief description |
This project will develop tools and knowledge to resolve a growing problem for commercial plantain and banana growers – the degradation of soil physical, chemical and biological properties which affect root system function and therefore plantation production and productivity. Project partners will measure over 50 characteristics of soil and plant health in 40 banana fields as input to develop a diagnostic guide. Based on the results of a diagnosis of their soil health, growers can select alternative practices for testing and evaluate their economic viability.
Standards are also being developed for organic amendments. The vision of the project is to create a new banana production mentality based on the application of more and better technological alternatives to recover and maintain a better soil life quality that will result in higher productivity |
