To assess the impact of improved banana varieties on smallholders' livelihoods and provide banana researchers and extension services with information to use in setting research priorities, selecting "best-bet" traits and genetic backgrounds for traits, timing research efforts, identifying and targeting farmers, and designing appropriate mechanisms for dissemination of improved bananas. |
| Brief description |
A multidisciplinary team of researchers are studying the social, economic and agricultural dimensions of the impact of improved bananas in Uganda and Tanzania through a Sustainable Livelihoods Approach. The key research questions are:
1. Which are the most appropriate dissemination pathways (organization and form, or extension or delivery systems) for technologies?
2. Which farmers are most likely to adopt, and which economic, sociological and policy factors constrain their adoption?
3. What is the probable impact of technologies on the livelihoods of smallholder farmers?
4. What is the expected economic impact of technologies at the national level in different policy scenarios, and how does the distribution of the net benefits among social groups compare?
5. How can the evaluation of impacts using innovative approaches increase the capacity of the participating institutions to focus their work on poverty alleviation?
Through the involvement of agricultural researchers and decision-makers in the steering and design of the project, and in the development of processes of institutional learning, the project is intended to bring about changes in agricultural research and development and to influence more effectively the alleviation of poverty.
