Novel approaches to the improvement of banana production in Eastern Africa - the application of biotechnological methodologies (phase II)
Duration
Start date

Five years
2006
Total grant 1.5 Million US$
Donor Ugandan Governement
Location Uganda
Goal Within the broader development goal of improving rural livelihoods in communities that depend on banana production and processing, the specific purpose of this project is to develop transgenic East African highland bananas with resistance to banana weevil and nematodes in Uganda
Brief description The project aims to develop transgenic Musa AAA-East Africa Highland bananas (EAHB) with resistance to banana weevil and nematodes in Uganda. Therefore genetic transformation systems for EAHBs will be developed. Novel sources of resistance to weevils and nematodes identified and evaluated and partnerships and capacity for biotechnology research strengthened.
Partners Collaborating Institutions are:
• National Agricultural Research Organization – Kawanda Agricultural Research Institute (NARO-KARI), Uganda
• Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KULeuven), Belgium
• Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute, University of Pretoria (FABI), South Africa
