Start date
End date

December 2007

Total grant US$ 150,000
Donor Department of Agriculture – Bureau of Agricultural Research, Philippines
Location Philippines
Goal To enhance the availability of introduced and local varieties that are high-yielding and disease-resistant in order to provide more options for farmers growing bananas for food and income
Brief description The project focuses its activities on the introduction, evaluation and promotion of improved, high-yielding and disease resistant varieties. Superior local cultivars are also included. This is done through two National Repository, Multiplication and Dissemination Centers (NRMDC) at the Institute of Plant Breeding at the University of the Philippines in Los Baños and at the Bureau of Plant Industry in Davao City. The NRMDCs maintain a national repository of disease-free foundation stocks of the different introduced improved hybrids and local banana cultivars of superior quality making them accessible for broader evaluation and adaptation trials. Field demonstration trials are established in UPLB and Bureau of Plant Industries to showcase the availability of and evaluate the agronomic and yield characters of introduced cultivars, as well as their reactions to common diseases and pests. Farmer-participatory evaluation trials are being conducted in different parts of the country to determine local adaptability, yield and fruit quality, use and acceptability, particularly of the introduced cultivars.
