MGIS Networking PDF Imprimer
The Musa Germplasm Information System (MGIS) was established in 1997 by the International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain to support the exchange of data on Musa diversity between curators of ex situ collections. MGIS contains detailed and standardized information on the Musa accessions stored in various genebanks around the world.

It provides an inventory of ex situ Musa collections and related research results (taxonomic descriptions, some indicators of agronomic performance under different growing conditions, molecular characterization, disease resistance, health status, origin and environment in collecting sites, etc.).

The participating genebank curators enter their data in MGIS, which are then compiled by the MGIS administrator and disseminated on a CD-Rom and via the MGIS website. Workshops have been conducted to show curators how to use the MGIS database and to allow them to share their experience on characterization and germplasm management. All the data in MGIS remain the property of the genebank curators.

The scientific value of the data is being validated by a Taxonomic Advisory Group (TAG). As this is an on-going process, there will never be a definitive version of MGIS but a constantly evolving one that tries to reflect the most up-to-date knowledge in Musa taxonomy. The online version is also evolving and by its nature offers more possibilities than the CD-Rom version. It is already linked to TropGENE, the CIRAD database on genetic data, and will be expanded to include information at the cultivar level.
