The Banana Research Network for Eastern and Southern Africa (BARNESA) was created in 1994 to encourage cooperation between national research programmes in order to reverse the observed decline in banana production.
During its July 1995 meeting, the Committee of Directors of the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) approved the inclusion of BARNESA into its network.
Bioversity International’s regional office in Uganda provides the secretariat and coordination for the network.
