ProMusa convenors meeting, June 2005
ProMusa was created in 1997 to provide support to Musa breeding through six interlinked working groups, each focusing on a particular subject: genetic improvement, fusarium wilt, Mycosphaerella leaf spot diseases, weevils, nematodes and viruses.
In 2006, the number of working groups was reduced to three–crop improvement, crop protection and crop production–to stimulate interaction among specialists and focus them on developing a research-for-development agenda that crosses group boundaries.

The focus of ProMusa remains developing global public goods based on mobilizing the best science available internationally and bringing it to bear on the needs of the Musa research community in developing countries.

ProMusa also seeks to develop an enabling atmosphere and mechanisms that lead to a mutually beneficial exchange of genetic resources and a better use of Musa diversity.

In 2006 ProMusa formed a strategic alliance with the International Society for Horticultural Science to organize scientific meetings and encourage wider dissemination of our research results. Under this arrangement, the ISHS has formed a Banana and Plantain Section, based on the existing three working groups of ProMusa; at least one technical meeting will be organized each year and the proceedings will be published in the Society's Acta Horticulturae series.
