Can Musa processing contribute to rural development? PDF Imprimer

Processing bananas and plantains into diverse products with a longer shelf life – such as chips, flours and beverages – has been proposed as a way of absorbing seasonal surpluses and low grade production, and thus increasing and stabilising farmers’ incomes.

A preliminary survey of banana processing businesses carried out by Bioversity with partners in nine countries validated some simple analytical tools for use by multi-disciplinary teams, profiled successful businesses and identified the challenges to setting up processing businesses for rural development.

More information on these themes, including the case studies, is available through the resource platform on banana marketing and processing.
