Strengthening grower organizations, a key strategy for capturing greater value for rural communities PDF Print

Individual growers rarely produce enough bananas and plantains to influence the price they receive for their production. They do not have enough time or resources to gather information and as individuals they cannot easily guarantee the delivery of large volumes of fruit.

For small farmers, a marketing organization is usually essential to capturing added value. However, the process of setting up and sustaining transparent, well managed, innovative grower organizations requires training, technical assistance, financing and motivation.

In the resource platform on banana marketing and processing Bioversity and its partners are documenting case studies on the strengthening of banana grower organizations for improved marketing. This includes methods guides and training manuals and links to other web resources on farmer marketing organizations.
